Officers

Officers

Meet the FY11 Officers!
They were asked these two questions:
1. Why are you all here and involved in SWE?
2. What you looking to gain out of being an officer that is different than just being a member?

Chanda Varnom, President, Secretary, SWE UNF Counselor

1: I am primarily here for outreach and public awareness. I have a passion to teach young people, particularly females, what engineering is on a basic level so that they may have a better technical understanding of the world they live in. I feel it is imperative to better inform or remind the general public and K-12 teachers of what engineering is, what engineers do and why it is important to have females in the field.

2: I am looking to refine my leadership skills, to contribute my prior SWE experience to assist in the growth of this section, and to try to shed light on the importance of being a part of this organization.

Caren Doherty, VP (internal), Treasurer

1. Main reason is for personal growth, wanted to join group of my peers. Outreach efforts for other teens, girls and explain what engineering is all about and what engineers really do.
2. To have more of a voice in the society, and be able to use my experience and have a voice and help guide the group based on my experience.
Valerie Johnson, VP of Communications

1. I am involved in SWE to interact with others in the community and within the organization. SWE offers the great opportunity of bringing engineers from different fields together so they can learn and grow from each other. I am looking forward to outreach opportunities and showing young women how interesting and rewarding the engineering field is. I want to help SWE become a recognized and respected professional organization in the First Coast.

2. As an officer, I am looking to gain more leadership skills in an aspect that I am less familiar with (running a professional organization). This position is based on organization and communication which are important skills and that would be beneficial to enhance. I want to learn what it takes to have an active organization and put that into effect. I would also like to have a say in the activities and events that are planned for the members.

Kathy Bungard, Website Coordinator, Section Representative

1. High school outreach and making more teens aware of various types of engineering as a career path.
2. To be able to outreach and connect electronically and to a generation used to having information delivered electronically.
